BIOMOD explores the potential of structural and synthetic biology to repurpose natural mechanisms into new cells and devices. Adaptation using, rather than just observation of, evolved molecules and systems reveals the limits of our scientific understanding and will increasingly benefit mankind.

Team

I joined BIOMOD Oxford because I saw it as a great opportunity to learn how to develop novel ideas into projects and push the boundaries of biotechnology.

Bioengineering has so many incredible applications in medicine, research and healthcare. I want to be in there, designing and building to make a positive difference to people’s health sooner. I also love constructing things – being creative and designing new molecules is so much more fun than pulling them apart to see how they work (though we do that too!).

Being a recent convert to the wonderful world of biology, I wanted to get involved with BIOMOD to gain some hands-on wet lab experience, to see if I could put some physics to good use, and to get the (rare) opportunity to design a novel experiment from start to finish!

I love self-organisation. I helped start the first BIOMOD team in Australia and saw an opportunity to recreate this empowering educational experience for UK undergrads. I believe that the holistic BIOMOD experience - from finding funding and labspace, to designing a research project and communicating it to a wide audience - both trains and inspires better scientists.

I'm passionate about Synthetic Biology in all its forms, and eager for Oxford and the UK to showcase their expertise in this area. BIOMOD is an incredible learning experience which I wanted students here to have the opportunity to take part in. I hope in the future there will be many other UK teams!
